Information about the law:
COPPA puts special restrictions on software companies about the information they can collect about students 13 and under. Since we are a K8 district we will not allow any students to create their own accounts, teachers (or another adult) must make the accounts for them.
FERPA requires that schools have written permission from the parent or guardian in order to release any information from a student's education record. This means that without some very specific exceptions, you shouldn't be sharing student information with apps and websites without parent permission.
CIPA requires school districts to filter Internet access and provide other measures to protect students.
AB1584/SB1177 prohibits an operator of an Internet Web site or online service from knowingly using, disclosing, compiling, or allowing a 3rd party to use, disclose, or compile the personal information of a minor for the purpose of marketing or advertising specified types of products or services.
